1. Top things to do in Koh Rong Island
Snorkelling & Scuba Diving
In 2018, Cambodia made a significant announcement by creating its inaugural marine national park encompassing the seven islands of the Koh Rong archipelago and the surrounding coral ecosystems. While it may not be classified as a top-tier destination among diving enthusiasts, this remarkable conservation area offers a wealth of captivating snorkeling and diving locations, promising unforgettable underwater experiences.
Swim with the Plankton
Koh Rong boasts a captivating natural spectacle: the mesmerizing bioluminescent plankton, an absolute must-see during your island adventure! As you glide through the water, the subtlest movement agitates these minuscule plankton, causing them to emit a radiant, star-like fluorescent glow, transforming the sea into a celestial wonder.
For the most immersive plankton experience, darkness is key. Wander away from the beachfront lights to discover a secluded, pitch-black stretch of water, or consider chartering a boat for an enchanting nighttime swim under the shimmering stars of the sea.
Go beach hopping around the island on a boat tour
Undoubtedly, the most enjoyable means of discovering Koh Rong's treasures is by embarking on an island-hopping boat tour! These tours are readily available at various stands scattered along Kaoh Touch Beach, and a full-day excursion should be easily affordable, typically priced at under $15. These tours typically set sail in the afternoon, making stops at numerous secluded beaches and prime snorkeling locations around the island. They conclude after sunset, offering you the extraordinary opportunity to take a moonlit swim with bioluminescent plankton, adding a touch of magic to your island adventure!
Kayak over to Koh Toch Island
Right in front of Kaoh Touch Beach, there’s a small island named Koh Toch or Pagoda Island – it consists of only a pagoda, a couple of monks, and nature. Being so close to the beach, it is a great place to explore by kayak!
Party and make some new international friends
Koh Rong's vibrant social scene has traditionally revolved around backpackers, and the island was known for hosting lively parties akin to Full Moon gatherings a few years back. While the beach club that once hosted these grand events has since closed its doors, inquiring around will almost certainly lead you to a party in full swing at one of the numerous hostels scattered across the island!
Try the local food and get a fruit shake
The primary hub for dining and entertainment on the island is centered around Kaoh Touch Beach village. Among the various options, we have a top recommendation: the Happy Family restaurant. They offer an extensive menu featuring both Khmer and Western cuisine, maintain a hygienic kitchen, provide safe-to-consume ice (a crucial consideration in Cambodia), and serve the best Lok Lak dish on the entire island!
Right next to the Happy Family restaurant, you'll encounter the renowned Fruit Shake vendor (whose ice is equally reliable). This spot is a favorite among visitors for its affordable, fresh, and scrumptious shakes and fruit salads that are sure to tantalize your taste buds!

3. Transportation: How to Get to & Around Koh Rong Island
3.2. How to get to Koh Rong Island?
The only way to get to Koh Rong is to take a ferry from Sihanoukville. You may take a minibus from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville which takes roughly 6 hours. From Sihanoukville to Koh Rong, there are numerous ferry choices. We recommend taking the first available ferry because there is no reason to stay in Sihanoukville. All ferries arrive at White Beach (Koh Touch), the island’s major beach.
3.2. Ways to get around:
Koh Rong is the main Island and larger than Koh Rong Samloem. You can travel by foot, boat, or rent a motorcycle. Because the island’s roads aren’t ideal, you’ll need to be comfortable riding a scooter around the island. You’ll have to drive down the shore in certain places, but if you take your time, driving around the southern section of the island is ideal.
